Patch Sprint Participants Urged to Write Governor Pataki
Special Editorial by a Concerned Patch Sprinter
WILLSBORO, N.Y. – A long-time Patch Sprint racer and Board Member is asking all Patch Sprint participants to write New York State Governor George E. Pataki and urge him to reject International Paper’s application for a permit to burn tire chips to fuel its paper facility in Ticonderoga.

International Paper has applied for permission to burn recycled tires for a two-week test run. Officials have stated that burning tire chips will save the company $1.5 million a year in energy costs.

Burning the tires will release mercury and other forms of air pollution into the atmosphere. As the prevailing winds blow east, the pollution will settle across Lake Champlain in Vermont. The health of Vermont residents as well as ecosystems may be put at risk.
"The Patch Sprint recognizes the sensitivity of this issue as the North Country has a low median income and depends on International Paper for supplying many high paying jobs. The company also supports the local economy in many other indirect ways. However, as an organization that promotes health, fitness, and the outdoors, the Patch Sprint strongly opposes any action that will increase air pollution in the Adirondacks and the Green Mountains, " said the writer, who wishes to remain anonymous.
"Senators, town representatives, and residents from across Vermont have already expressed their concern. However, the decision is up to New York State officials. It is very important that the Governor hear opposition from New York State residents as well as those living in Vermont.

We are asking all Patch Sprint participants, whether from New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, or Maine to write Governor Pataki and encourage him to reject International Paper’s Application. Tell him you are concerned about the health risks to Vermont residents. Ask him to act to reduce air pollution and not increase it in a region that is already overwhelmed with air quality and acid rain problems. Tell him that mercury levels are already too high in fish and we must do everything we can to lower concentrations. Finally, tell him that rejecting International Paper’s application is the right thing to do for the environment."
Hearing the concerns from the 50+ participants in the Patch Sprint will help influence the Governor’s decision.
