| MEET THE PATCH SPRINTERS | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Five Questions with..... Jason Metakis: Men's Open Division | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| He's come so very close but, so far, no "Janny". 29 year-old Jason Metakis has been the Patch Sprint's most consistent runner, since the event went public in 2000. Four times in the top five and no finish lower than seventh overall, Metakis has a personal best time of 2:34:09. Only five other racers have been faster. In 2005 he was 5th, just behind twin brother Marc. Metakis, a New York City banker and former college football player at Harvard, is also one of the Adirondack Scholarship Foundation's most generous supporters through the Patch Sprint. He is engaged to be married to long-time Patch Sprint volunteer Aubrey Moss. |

| 1. WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT THE PATCH SPRINT?
Patch Sprint provides a great opportunity to see old friends and enjoy the Adirondacks. Plus, it's a great way to raise money for the Adirondack Scholarship Foundation. 2. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF THE PATCH SPRINT? Route navigation. Despite six consecutive Patch Sprints, I have yet to run a clean race from start to finish. I came close in 2001 running with Elliott, but that was before I knew to take the Chimney shortcut to the summit of Poko. 3. WHAT IS YOUR TRAINING PROGRAM IN PREPARATION FOR THE RACE? The official "Hike...Run" training program is difficult to follow in New York City, so I try to focus on mid-distance runs coupled with a heavy dose of stair workouts. On the advice of my personal trainer and fiance Aubrey Moss, I have also recently added a daily course visualization routine to my training program. 4. YOU HAVE HAD MANY TOP FINISHES, BUT NO VICTORIES. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR 2006? Assuming the weather is good and I don't take any wrong turns, I think this could be the year to finally go sub-2:30. 5. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER BEEN TO THE PATCH SPRINT? Pace yourself and try to follow someone who has run the course before. If running 12 miles up and down four mountains isn't your thing, consider volunteering - it's a great way to enjoy the weekend and contribute to a very special event. |
