| On the outside, Jim Kobak looks mellow and in-control. But on the inside, a competitive fire burns. And it nearly burnt a hole into the 36-year old endurance racer during the 2005 Patch Sprint.
“It just killed me to trudge along at the back of the pack and watch Fiegl win in a walk,” said Kobak earlier this week while running 5:07 mile intervals, with the incline set at 15%, on his treadmill in Peru. In 2005, Jason Fiegl, Keeseville, NY, captured the “Janny” as the fastest racer in the Patch Sprint. It was Fiegl’s third overall victory (he shared the honor in 1997) to go along with a rare double: Fiegl also captured the 2006 winter sprint in record time. All of which makes Kobak even hungrier. “In the past, I placed too much emphasis on my skiing, my job and my family. Not this year. 2006 will be all about training for the Patch Sprint. I may not break two hours, and, with the field growing in numbers and talent every year, I may not even win. But I guarantee you one thing: I’m going to kick Fiegl’s bandana wearing, mellow acting, Dylan listening ass!” REGISTRATION is under way for the 2006 Patch Sprint, scheduled for Saturday, May 27. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the first recorded “Patch-in-a-Day.” Ten years ago, in 1996, the course was first attempted for competitive time. |

| All of the 2005 DIVISIONS remain in place. “Last year, we had a good representation, and tight races in several of the divisions (a record narrow margin of just 26 seconds separated the top two finishers in the Masters Division),” said race director Sandra Solomon. Solomon cited, in particular, “the interesting finish in the Clydesdale division, with weight greatly effecting the net times, as well as the huge number of trekkers.” In 2005, 24 people took part in the non-competing trekker division. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Race officials are very excited about the debut appearance of two renowned athletes. Marianne Perreault, of Chazy, NY, is slated to be the first-ever racer in the Women’s Masters Division. “I’ll be 40 and best I can tell, no woman that age has ever done the Patch Sprint. So no matter how long it takes me to cover the entire course, I’m not only gonna win, but also set a division record.
Meantime, Lance Armstrong, 35, of Austin, TX, is coming to the Adirondack Mountains for the first time. “Just when I thought I’d run out of challenges, I stumble upon this website (www.patchsprint.com) and read about a race that even I might not be able to win,” said Armstrong, from his villa in Nice, France. “But I have to at least try. What do I have to lose? These are the days when anything goes; every day is a winding road and all I wanna do is have some fun. I’ve got a feeling I’m not the only one.” |
