| MEET THE PATCH SPRINTERS | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Five Questions with..... Matt Moscato | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| His introduction to camp- and the Adirondacks- came via the Patch Sprint. Ten years ago this month, 32-year old Matt Moscato paid a holiday visit to college friend Jason Fiegl, and wound up covering the Patch course as a photographer, volunteer and spectator. The fever was caught immediately. Moscato signed on to work at Pok-O-MacCready camps, and ran his first sprint in 2003, finishing with an impressive time of 2:41:58. Best known for covering the course with his daughter Sierra either on his shoulders, in her stroller, or by his side, Moscatto will return to running and racing for this year's Patch Sprint. |

| YOU WERE AT THE PATCH SPRINT WAY BACK IN 1997. WHAT HAS BEEN THE
BIGGEST CHANGE OVER THE PAST TEN YEARS?
Back in 1997 I was up for my first visit to the camp. That is when I first fell in love with Poko and the ADK. John Weber "the strongest man ever" and I saw the group take off, and then headed up Pok-o-Mooshine with a case of Busch beer and a whole watermelon. Skip, Marko, Fiegl, and Tom Edwards all made it to the top hand-in-hand. Greg Henderson had to be left behind but, to everyone’s astonishment, about a half an hour later looking as though he had been through a war, there he was finishing the Patch Sprint. He had a beer! The camaraderie and stories of teamwork and determination are still the same today. The competition is a much bigger part now. WHAT IS YOUR TRAINING ROUTINE FOR THE RACE? Gym in the morning, gym after work. Hills on the weekends. To the doctor when I think my ankle is broken. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FOUR YEARS, YOU WILL NOT HAVE YOUR DAUGHTER IN TOW. WIEGHT OFF OF YOUR SHOULDERS OR MISSED RACING PARTNER? Both. She is starting to get big. But, I think I could still carry her. She is a great partner and company on the hike. I’ll miss that a lot this year but she is really looking forward to the whole experience again and doing the kinder sprint. She wanted to do the whole course this year on her own. I think she may do two mountains. CAN EITHER FIEGL OR KOBAK BE BEATEN, AND ARE YOU THE ONE TO DO IT? No!!! and No!!! They’re the greatest of all time. We’ll have to wait until they retire. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS ATTENDING THE PATCH SPRINT FOR THE FIRST TIME? It’s too late for advice. If you’re not competing to win, stick with someone who knows the course. |
