| At the age of 40, Leo Tolstoy completed his masterpiece, War and Peace. Harriet Beecher Stowe was 40 upon the publication of what was the most important piece of fiction in American history, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. John Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth, also at the age of 40. And as for Paul Revere … well, you all know what Paul Revere did when he was 40 years old. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| And now, Jim Kobak has turned 40. Jim Kobak: five-time Patch Sprint Janny winner (as recently as 2007), five-time Men’s Open Champion, course record holder. And how has Kobak decided to embrace the age of 40, the age of masterpieces, of orbit, of American patriotism? He has stepped down from the Open Men’s field and officially enrolled in the Master’s field! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| It was only a few years ago that Deborah Nordyke shattered the Open Women’s record at the age of 44, but clearly Kobak is no Nordyke. Instead, shunning the challenges of Fiegl, Stanley, and other rivals, Kobak was recently heard to exhult “I’m going to stomp these old men all over these mountains.” Fellow Masters competitors were unavailable for comment, as Jerry Ross was off on an Elderhostel trip and Tom Lynch was catching the 5:00 P.M. Early Bird special at his local Ground Round. | ![]() |

| Norkyke was fit and full of energy in setting the record at age 44; Kobak (far right) has seen his bones go through a rapid decay. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| When reached for comment, Kobak wheezed out something like "my muscles are sore", although it was hard to understand him clearly, due to the loud whistles being projected every time he used the letter "S" in a sentence. Meanwhile, in an unrelated story, Patch Sprint founder and coordinator Tim Singer, three weeks shy of his 50th birthday, is contemplating starting a new Patch racing division. This division will only be open to 50 year olds. "I've got a request in to the race directors. I hope they approve it!" |
