"WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THE PATCH SPRINT"
The Participants Speak Out
January 23, 2009--  Registration is now under way for the 13th edition of the Patch Sprint and officials expect the event to be full well in advance of Memorial Day weekend.
"Last year we had to close registration a few days in advance," stated race director Greg Henderson.  "At this point, the Patch Sprint tends to sell itself:  as a race, a trek,a weekend reunion and, especially, as a fund raiser for the
Adirondack Scholarship Foundation."
Why has the Patch Sprint become so popular?  To find out, we researched comments from just some of the hundreds of men, women, boys and girls who have participated over the years.  To learn more about what these participants think of the Patch Sprint, click on their name.
"The best part of the Patch Sprint is getting to see everyone and getting to just hang out at camp.  It's one of the four steps during the year that Pok-O junkies use to get through the off-season and back to the summer.
Plus, it's fun watching everyone pass me as I struggle up Pok-O."
Josh Bornt: Clydesdale Medalist
"There are a few best parts...  The reunion aspect.  Being able to be with lots of  friends, alumni and my entire family for a long weekend.  The Pasta supper, Registration/Expo, on top of Poko, at the picnic the day after the race.  The atmosphere - everyone is always so happy and fun and so kind - but that's camp and camp people.  It's one of my favorite events of the year." Kelly Zimmmerman:  2002 Women's Overall Champion
"Patch Sprint provides a great opportunity to see old friends and enjoy the Adirondacks. Plus, it's a great way to raise money for the Adirondack Scholarship Foundation." Jason Metakis:  Top-3 finisher
"Climbing Pok-O-Moonshine. I really like the Pasta dinner. It's also fun to see my friends." Chad Canning:  Kindersprinter
"Catching up with old friends and getting to visit camp while participating in an event that can help out the ADK Scholarship fund all at the same time. There are some folks who I only see or talk to at the Sprint but each year we pick right up and catch right up. There are some folks that I see and talk to more regularly through the year and with them the Sprint is just another fun weekend of memories to add to our camp arsenal of stories!" Tricia Woodward:  Trekker & Volunteer
"The anticipation and the fantastic news coverage building up the hype
that is the "Patch Sprint".  I also really do enjoy the people and just being at Poko."
Ken Ryba:  Clydesdale Champion
"The best part about the sprint is that it helps me "kill two birds with one stone": it gives me motivation to stay in shape in the off-season; and it gives me a good excuse to visit camp and stay in touch with the Pok-O family." Ben Stanley:  Regular runner-up.
"I find this race a great metaphor for life, for it is such a testament to enduring and enjoying.  You see each person persevere at his or her own level, and it's reassuring that such perseverance is rewarded with a joyous gathering at the end." Tom Lynch:  Masters Champion
"It's great to see how psyched people are to participate in the event, from the trekkers all the way to the kids. Everyone can come and be involved in some way! It also gives people a
great reason to make sure they get up to the mountains at least once during the summer!"
Sandy Solomon:  Trekker & Volunteer
"Well for me, the best part about the Patch Sprint is probably the enthusiasm of the event, as well as seeing everyone again.  Things like Chris Bell with half the bones in his body broken still wanting to climb up Pok-O, for me really brings out the spirit of the whole weekend." Jacob Gittler:  First to register in 2009
“The best part is to see it be a fun day for everyone; much more important then winning or losing the race.  It brings friends together, friends who rarely get to spend enough time during the year.” Augusta Wilson:  Racer, trekker and volunteer.
"Spending hours enjoying the camaraderie of everyone who made it out to walk, run, hike and support the greatest camp in the universe via the Adirondack Scholarship Foundation.  The sense of accomplishment and relief that I dont have to do that again for another year is huge." Dana Beck:  Trekker, volunteer and future Race Director.
