As of this morning (3/29), racer and trekker divisions have reached full capacity for the 2014 Patch Sprint. This marks the third consecutive year that these divisions have filled up prior to April.
"Ample warning was given to all past participants," said event co-organizer, Tim Singer, "so no one has any excuse if they missed out."
Volunteers, Kindersprinters and chaperones, along with guests and donors may still get on board via the event registration page.
With 89 men and women's racers, and an additional 29 registered trekkers, the event has reached capacity, but opportunities remain for interested participants to be placed on a waiting list. "Sort of like the airlines, we tend to overbook by a bit," said registration coordinator Peter Joelson. "We anticipate that a few people may drop out and, if space allows, we will dip into the waiting list."
In keeping with the 2014 Patch Sprint theme of Magic Sprintdom, this year's training series has an animated focus.
As always, the series of pre-Patch training events, known as BEAST ("Best ever awesome sprint training"), is being hosted by the Peru Nordic Masters, along with mascot Kong.
As an added feature for 2014, the weekly gatherings will feature not just running and climbing, but a potluck picnic dinner!
The BEAST series will be held Tuesday's beginning April 8. Read all about it here.
By all measure, it has been a particularly brutal winter in the greater metropolitan Long Pond region.
a normal to slightly below-average amount of snowfall has been offset by ice, wind and relentlessly cold temperatures.
As a result, 79 days into the winter season, there has yet to be a recorded winter Patch completion. One long-time participant made a recent unsuccessful attempt, reporting that "the ice was bad, but the deep snow in the areas where people haven't been was just awful! I was post-holing everywhere, before finally turning back halfway up Sugarloaf."
Winter trekkers have until March 21 to report a successful attempt. The fastest completion for the season will be considered the 2014 winter Patch champion.
