Sean Davis and Sarah Duclos were the big winners among an impressive field of racers at the 2017 Patch Sprint, held in sunny conditions Saturday, May 27.
Davis (Willsboro, NY) outpaced his brother, Liam and 2013 race winner Jan Wellford, all finishing within 90 seconds of one another, with Top-5 historical record times.
FROM THE CHAMPION: “So going in I knew Jan and Liam were going to be tough and that Jeremy (Drowne) was also very fast, although his foot injury clearly slowed him today. Having never run a trail race before, my strategy was to go out relatively easy and get a feel for how the other top competitors were running, and maybe try to make a move between Rattlesnake and Sugarloaf if possible. We had a pretty close pack on Bare, with Jeremy leading up and Jan leading down. At the base of Bare I took the lead and was able to stretch it out a bit on Rattlesnake. Once we hit Reber Road again I really felt I hit my stride, and from that point I didn’t see anyone behind me until the Base of Pok-O, when I noticed Liam maybe 50 yards back. We had a good push up Pok-O, and despite my legs cramping going up the chimney I was able to hold him off and take the win by 20 seconds.”
The two-time defending Patch Sprint men's and women's champions have each decided to sit out the 2017 event. 2015 & 2016 overall champion Austin Huneck stated he is "not happy with the putrid level of prize money," and will be racing instead that day at the Prefontaine Games in Eugene, Oregon.
Meantime, while three-peater Patty Hurlburt continues to train this spring on course, she will be content to just "kick back and watch others duke it out on race day." Event officials have assured Hurlburt that - should she get the last minute itch to run - there's a spot for her. (See full 2016 results HERE)
However, rest assured, the race for the "Janny" will be fierce-- perhaps the most hotly contested in years. The field is made up of three different champion-contending groups: Past winners... Emerging stars... Stellar newcomers.

As a reminder: While training, please DO NOT USE the course descent from Bare to Homestead.
This is private land and with access granted May 27 only. The owners have given permission with the understanding that if anyone trespasses at other times, they will deny access permanently. If you are training on Bare, you are asked to please come down the way you came up.
As you can see in this map from May 2, this request has been ignored by some folks training for the Patch Sprint.
Please help in maintaining the integrity of the Patch Sprint course. Thanks!
